Thailand Marriage Visa

Citizens of Australia

The Thailand Marriage Visa for citizens of Australia is issued to applicants who are married to Thai nationals and wish to visit and live with their Thai spouse in Thailand.

Marriage Visa Qualifications

In order to apply for a Marriage Visa, you must first obtain a 90-day Non-Immigrant Visa and meet the following requirements:

  • Must be married to a Thai national
    • This is substantiated through a Marriage Certificate (Kor Ror 3) and Marriage Registration (Kor Ror 2). If the applicant married abroad, the applicant or the Thai spouse must report the marriage to Amphur and obtain a Kor Ror 22. If you are not certain what these documents are or where to find them, contact us and we will happily explain.
  • Must meet ONE (1) of the financial requirements
    • A security deposit of 400,000 THB in a Thai bank account that has been present for at least 2 months prior to the visa application.
    • A monthly income of at least 40,000 THB. To verify this income, a letter from your foreign embassy has to be shown.
  • Provide supporting documents as proof of the security deposit in a Thai bank account as follows:
    • Updated bank book or passbook
    • Bank letter stating that the money was deposited to the account from an overseas source not less than 2 months prior
  • Other documents that may be required:
    • There are instances, depending on the immigration office when a copy of an Affirmation of Freedom to Marry is required. This affirmation can also be obtained from your country’s embassy in Thailand.
    • If you are unable to obtain an income affidavit from your embassy, you can prove your monthly income with a 12-month bank statement of your Thai bank account, which must show a monthly deposit of at least 40,000 THB.

It is important to note that if the documents aren’t in either English or Thai, you will be required to have them translated by an authorized translator as well as legalized by the relevant Embassy or consulate notary before sending them in.

Benefits of the Thai Marriage Visa

You can choose to pursue a work permit alongside the Marriage Visa to work in Thailand, which will enable you to:

  • Open a bank (savings) account in Thailand
  • Apply for an extension of 1 year, if you still meet the requirements
  • Apply for Permanent Residence if you meet the eligibility criteria

You can apply for either a single-entry or multiple-entry permit for this type of visa. If you need to leave the country while you are holding a single-entry visa, you may apply for a re-entry permit at the nearest immigration office or an international airport before leaving the country.

Please note that you will need to report to the Thai Immigration Bureau every 90 days on this visa, but if you leave the country before the 90-day report deadline, the countdown will reset upon entering Thailand.

For other options to stay long-term in Thailand, consider the LTR Visa or the Retirement Visa. If you have any more questions, Siam Legal International offers a free 30-minute consultation via phone call.
