Thailand Retirement Visa

Citizens of Australia

The Thai Retirement Visa can be issued to Australian applicants wishing to retire in the Kingdom of Thailand and meet the eligibility requirements.

Retirement Visa Qualifications

In order to apply for a Retirement Visa, you must first obtain a 90-day Non-Immigrant Visa and meet the following requirements:

  • Be 50 years of age or over
  • Meet any one (1) of these financial requirements by possessing:
    • A security deposit of 800,000 THB in a Thai bank account for 2 months prior to the visa application
    • Monthly income of at least 65,000 THB
    • Combination of security deposit and annual income totaling 800,000 THB.
  • Provide the following documents:
    • In case of a security deposit, you must provide an updated bank book or passbook together with a bank letter stating that the money had been deposited to the account from an overseas source not less than 2 months prior.
    • A letter from your embassy in Thailand verifying your monthly income.
    • In cases where your embassy does not issue an income letter, you can provide a 12-month bank statement showing a regular deposit of 65,000 THB into a Thai bank account.
  • Other documents* that may be required:
    • Police Clearance Document
    • Medical Certificate
    • Proof of Health Insurance
Note

These documents are not usually required if the visa application is submitted inside Thailand. There are rare cases, however, when an official from the Thai embassy or consulate in your country may ask for them before issuance of the visa.

Benefits of Thai Retirement Visa

With the Retirement Visa, you will not be permitted to work, but you will still be granted the rights to:

  • Open a bank (savings) account in Thailand;
  • Apply for a visa extension of 1 year, if you still meet the requirements.

You can apply for either a single-entry or multiple-entry permit for this type of visa. If you need to leave the country while you are holding a single-entry visa, you may apply for a re-entry permit at the nearest immigration office or an international airport before leaving the country.

Please note that you will need to report to the Thai Immigration Bureau every 90 days on this visa, but if you leave the country before the 90-day report deadline, the countdown will reset upon entering Thailand.

Another option to stay long-term in Thailand is the LTR Visa, which grants more privileges but is more difficult to secure. If you have any more questions, Siam Legal International offers a free 30-minute consultation via phone call.
